BC Film + Media & China Film Producers’ Association Sign Memorandum of Understanding

BC Film + Media and the China Film Producers’ Association signed a memorandum of understanding during the Vancouver International Film Festival’s Film and Television Forum. The agreement expresses the shared intention of encouraging collaboration between film, television and digital media producers in British Columbia and China.

“We believe China and British Columbia can benefit enormously from the knowledge and expertise of each other’s industries. Canadians see China as an essential partner in a world of interrelated economies and cultures,” says Kevin Krueger, Minister of Tourism, Culture and the Arts. “Sharing our collective experience through film and television can be an effective way of nurturing this partnership.”

BC Film Foundation Announces the Winners of the Daryl Duke & William Vince Scholarships

Lisa Jackson, Jessica Cheung and Nova Arlene Ami were announced today as the winners of the 2010 Daryl Duke & William Vince Scholarships.

The BC Film + Media Foundation’s Daryl Duke & William Vince Scholarships were created in order to honour the significant contributions of Mr. Duke and Mr. Vince to the film and television industry by assisting in the advanced education of exceptional BC filmmakers.

Eligible disciplines included writing, directing, producing, cinematography, art direction, picture editing, sound design, visual effects and interactive media. Applications were adjudicated by a jury of active BC film, television and digital media industry professionals. Each recipient will receive $10,000 towards their educational expenses for the 2010/2011 year.

Administrative Changes Regarding Documentation Required Under the Film Incentive BC Tax Credit Program

Please note that BC Film + Media has made administrative changes regarding the documentation required under the Film Incentive BC Tax Credit program.

As CAVCO has eliminated its Declaration of Canadian Citizenship, BC Film will no longer be requesting this document as proof of Canadian citizenship for key creative personnel or non-BC Canadian producers. Instead, BC Film will require applicants to confirm that they have verified the citizenship of the Canadian point personnel and producers at the time they apply for their Eligibility Certificate. When applying for a Completion Certificate, BC Film will require a copy of the CAVCO Part A Certificate. For those productions that are not otherwise eligible for the CAVCO Canadian Production Tax Credit, other proof of citizenship may be required.

Digital Development Lab Award Winners Announced

CBC, BC Film + Media and New Media BC today announced the CBC Development Award winner from the second Digital Development Interactive Content Lab.

“Sex With John” takes top prize

The winner of the $10,000 CBC Development Award for 2009 is “Sex With John”; an interactive comedy series developed by BC writers and producers Lauren Grant and Lori Lozinski. “Sex With John” follows 32-year-old over educated and under experienced sexologist Mallory Davis through the cyber trenches in a hunt for her own elusive relationship. The narrative engages the audience in a ‘chose your own dating adventure’ style of storytelling.

Steven Denault Takes Home Second Annual MPPIA Short Film Award

Vancouver, Canada – Writer/director Steven Denault emerged from a field of five talented filmmakers to take home the second annual MPPIA Short Film Award on December 7 at the Whistler Film Festival.

Denault won the Award based on his overall submission, script and pitch for The Gray Matter presented to a jury of Canadian filmmakers on Saturday, December 6 during the Whistler Film Festival Industry Forum. The pitch competition featured five finalists selected in the first adjudication phase in October 2008. Denault’s co-finalists for this year’s MPPIA Short Film Award were: Neil Every (Silence is Golden), Jason Karman (Copies), Cory Kinney (Buddy Movie) and Eric Tremblay (Dumped).

Digital Development Lab Awards $20,000 in Prizes

CBC, BC Film + Media and New Media BC today announced the BC winners of the first Digital Development Lab.

Interactive Entertainment Award
The winner of the $10,000 CBC Development Award in this division is “ComaState”, an interactive drama developed by BC writers and producers Dwayne Beaver, Rudy Thauberger and Ed Hatton. “ComaState” is a layered drama with a rich range of web resources. The project imagines a possible future where prisoners are subjected to suspended animation until they experience true remorse for their crimes. The story will be told through webisodes, viral campaigns and role playing opportunities, and will feature clues and events outside the story that will invite viewers to explore and participate as well as watch.
